For over 125 years, Misitra has carried forward a tradition of authentic attar-making that was founded by Pt. Banwarilal Misra in the historic perfumery hub of Kannauj. From those early beginnings, we expanded to Mumbai, Lucknow, Pune, and Calcutta — all the while preserving the soul of our craft.
With time we are now starting our journey ONLINE and wish to deliver what is been passed on from generation after generation.
Today, Misitra is proud to be in its fifth generation, continuing a legacy rooted in devotion to purity, artistry, and authenticity. Our own manufacturing unit in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, employs time-honoured distillation techniques, ensuring each drop of attar embodies the depth and richness that only decades of experience can produce.
Kannauj isn’t just a location — it’s the fragrance capital of India. Perfume, attar or ittar, has been crafted in this sacred town since at least the time of Harshavardhana (7th century AD), making it one of the oldest continuous centres of perfume-making in the subcontinent.
The methods we use — such as the traditional deg-bhapka distillation — have been passed down through generations, as has the respect for natural ingredients and the discipline of letting each fragrance mature to its fullest character. Kannauj was the seat of perfumeries in the Mughal period, especially under patrons like Jahangir and Nur Jahan, who elevated perfume culture and ensured the skills, plants, and respect for scent became part of living tradition.
